Introduced in the early 2000s, adaptive cruise control is a sophisticated modification of existing cruise control systems. Whereas previous cruise control systems would only maintain the vehicle’s speed, adaptive cruise control systems use road-scanning technology to automatically slow the vehicle down if traffic ahead is decelerating. Then, once traffic ahead picks up speed, the adaptive cruise control system will return the vehicle to its pre-deceleration speed of travel.
