Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS)

Widely available as early as the 1970s, the function of ABS is to prevent wheels from locking during an episode of heavy braking, thereby allowing the driver to retain steering control of the vehicle while braking. ABS prevents wheels from locking by releasing and applying the brake in rapid succession to wheels that the system senses are in danger of locking.
