An electronic control unit is the central processor of a drive-by-wire vehicle system. Generally, information from various sensors positioned around the vehicle is compiled in the ECU. Then, the ECU issues commands based on this information. For example, the ECU in a vehicle with brake override might order the brake pedal to override the gas pedal, if both are pushed down simultaneously.
