Useful off-road or when road conditions are very poor, a four-wheel drive vehicle is capable of delivering torque from the engine to all four wheels simultaneously. In contrast, front-wheel and rear-wheel drive vehicles are only capable of delivery engine power to one set of wheels (in a rear-wheel drive vehicle, for example, the rear wheels effectively push the vehicle forward). Four-wheel drive vehicles are able to make more effective use of the available traction on the road.
