Lasers are used for a wide variety of purposes, but in the context of road safety, lasers are sometimes used in features like forward collision warning systems. In this case, a laser is mounted in the vehicle. When the light beam reaches another vehicle, the location, distance, and speed of travel of that vehicle are calculated by the safety system.
