Pumping the brakes

Pumping the brakes is a technique meant to prevent wheel lock that was taught to drivers prior to the advent of anti-lock braking systems (ABS). By applying and releasing the brakes in rapid succession, drivers may be able to stop their wheels from locking, thereby retaining steering control over the vehicle during an episode of heavy braking. Drivers who have ABS on their vehicles should not pump the brakes.
